What "Homsteading" means to me,

What is your definition of homesteading? Currently the term 'homesteading'[1] applies to anyone who is a limb of the back-to-the-land movement and who chooses to live a sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyle. This is Wikipedia's definition, I'm still trying to define my definition of homesteading as it applies to our lives. Do we want to go as far as Barbara Kingsolver and her family did in her book Animal, Vegetable,Miracle? This family moved to Ky. and decided to live off of what they could grow themselves or buy only from local producers for one year. It is a great book and I recommend it to everyone. Or do we grow what we can and supplement form the local stores. How responsible do we want to be in cutting down our carbon footprint? I know at the moment we do not have enough experience in growing food,raising animals or farming to go as far as the Kingslover family. They did take a while to set themselves up for this experiment also. I think that is a goal we could shoot for somewhere down the road. This year I think we will grow a sm/med. size garden, build a chicken house,add the chickens and work on getting fences up for the pasture that we want. That and various small projects around the house should keep us busy. We will have a pot belly pig to board for a relative,he is a pet(this has been stressed strongly), but I could get him a girl friend and raise little pot bellies!
