Favorite Homeschool websites
Our school year got off to a late beginning this year due to an ac leak.We ended up having to replace the kitchen, laundry room, one closet and bathroom floors. It was very loud(due to the wall drying fans) and messy. But now we are back on track and finally getting into the groove of school. One of my favorite things and downfalls about homeschooling with the internet is that there is so much out there
to get lost in.I have so many sites saved that I get overwhelmed looking at them. I decided to make a folder of just the main websites we will use this year'
One of the new ones I found this year is Spelling City,http://www.spellingcity.com. On this site you can make lists of the spelling words your kids are using or use the ones already on the site. There are games to play for each word list and when your child is ready they can take the tests to see how many words they have learned. This week we have been doing the compound word lists and the girls are flying thru it.
CK-12,http://www.ck12.org/teacher/, is another great free resource for so many subjects.I plan on using it for earth science and writing with the girls this year.
Khan Academy,http://www.khanacademy.org/,is on our list every year and is a wonderful resource!
For history we will be checking out
HyperHistory,http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html , Have Fun with History,http://www.havefunwithhistory.com/,American History Games,http://gamequarium.com/americanhistory.html,and Best of History website,http://besthistorysites.net/,
Pics4Learning website,http://besthistorysites.net/, has wonderful pictures to print out for timelines and for anything else you might need them for.
Another great resource is a blog that I follow,Joybilee Farm,http://fiberarts.ca/blog/free-kindle-books-for-homesteaders-and-homeschoolers-september-21-edition/,everyday she puts up free Kindle books that can be downloaded to your kindle or computer, homesteading, homeschooling, craft and several more subjects.Be sure to check her out.
We also plan on using Life of Fred books for math and Netflix for all the wonderful documentaries they have.
What are your favorite websites to use in homeschooling?
Blessed Be!

The journey to the food we eat,
"Farmers are the only indispensable people on the face of the earth."
Lately we have had many discussions about what is actually in our food, where and how all that we eat is processed. Label reading happens with everything and discussions about what the ingredients actually are has become the norm lately. We watched the movie Fresh last night with our girls (10 and 12) http://www.freshthemovie.com/.%20This This movie is about change, changing the way we raise the meat we eat and the food we grow. Now I have been talking about these ideas for awhile now and the kids listened with half an ear, thinking mom was on another health kick. Watching how the animals were treated in the movie last night and learning what was injected/fed to them must have really hit home, I could actually see the light bulb go on over their heads, lol. They asked where we could find meat that wasn't processed in the ways shown. They were really furious seeing how the chicks were thrown and crowded into the chicken houses. We talked about the pesticides that were sprayed on the crops and watched How stuff works in the food and beverages. We watched how corn, salt and wheat were processed, the spraying of chemicals on the corn and the genetic modification of both wheat and corn.
There are several movies in our netflix queue for use to watch exploring more on this subject. Fed Up, What's on your plate, Ingredients and Food Matters are on the list. Tomorrow we will visit a local fresh bread store and a meat market, comparing prices and ingredients. This morning Piper looked at the ingredients for the granola cereal she was eating and asked why there was sugar, honey and dextrose in it. So we talked about what we wanted in our granola and plan on making some this weekend. Zoe was ranting(she tends to do that) about potato starch in the shredded cheese we had for dinner so we are going to learn about making cheese and why potato starch might be put in there. They have about decided that if they can't read or understand the ingredient when it is looked up then maybe it didn't need to be there. We are looking for different ideas for meals using the least amount of processed ingredients possible. I feel like they are coming to understand why gardening and raising our own animals are so important. It also helps that several of their friends parents are going thru the same process with their kids, I love listening to some of the conversations they have about the food that they are eating. The next read aloud book will be Animal,Vegatable,Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I want to explore how many of the foods we eat are grown close to home(50 to 100 miles).
Somtimes I really feel that the girls aren't learning anything in our homeschooling journey and then there are times like this where I am drowning in the wave of information they are processing. Homeschooling Rocks!!

Old Mill, treasure that we found!
After our trip to Bloomin'Acres Farm we decided to go to a nearby park for lunch. As I was driving I saw a huge wheel next to a skeleton of a rock building just begging to be explored. We pulled in and were followed by the rest of our group. All were excited to find such an interesting looking place to explore! It was decided that it must have been a mill at one time. Here is the info that one mom found after they got home.
"A prominent landmark in the Cane Hill area is the water-powered mill known variously as the Pyeatte-Moore Mill and the Moore-Buchanan Mill. Built during the 1830s, the mill was used to grind wheat for flour and corn for corn meal, to saw logs, and even to card wool. It appears to have been moved to its present location on Jordan Creek in 1902 and was used until the 1930s. The remains of the thirty-six-foot diameter draw wheel can still be seen, and the mill is in the process of being restored. "
The kids want to go back to explore more and maybe see what is under the building.

That time of year!
It's August, and this means back to school for all the kids. Homeschoolers are having their Not-Back to school get together and the stores are a night mare to get into because of parents getting school supplies. This year my girls will be using the Ace program from a local school. We received 6 boxes of supplies from K12 on Friday, ironically I was at a book sale trying to sell about 7 boxes of books! This is an online program and we will work with the Lincoln school system so technically they are in public school but we have more control over when they work and the girls do not have to get up at the crack of dawn to get on a bus!
At the Homeschool book sale we had on Friday there were a few new families that came thru. You can always tell new homeschooling families, they have that deer in the headlight look of panic on their face as opposed to the same more settled look on longtime homeschooling parents!. They know that this is a good choice for their child but society/their family/co-workers/neighbors/person on the street will try and tell them different, that there is nothing wrong with the school system/the child is just lazy/a trained teacher can teach your child along with 30 others in the class room better than your one on one could do/your out of your freaking mind! I have been told all that and more. We will always have our doubts about this path we have chosen, worried that we are screwing up our kids lives because they are not learning everything their age group is at the same time or the same way. Then we hear stories of hs kids excelling in a major way, of colleges actively looking for hs kids to come to their schools, then we look back at all the famous creative people who were home schooled and we know that though our learning choice is not for all it is right for our family!(climbing off my soap box now)
The first place I send new comers is to the library. Most libraries have a good selection of books on homeschooling now, if not they are willing to help you locate what you need. Then I send them online, there is such a plethra of home education information online that it can be very overwhelming! One of the best sites I go to is Secular Homeschool,http://www.secularhomeschool.com/
So #1 is not to panic, this will work but probably not in any fashion you ever imianged.
2. Try and find a family who has been doing this a few years to get you thru the tough times, you know when little Tom wants to do his math behind the couch instead of at the wonderful desk you have for him or Katie wants to watch documentaries on dinosaurs all day instead of writing sentences.
3. Know that EVERY year (if not every day)you will swear to yourself and your kids that this is not working and they are going back to school!
4. Listen, you might not think your kids are learning much but when you see them kick their dad's butt when playing Planet Earth because they did watch all those documentaries you know you're on the right track.
and last ,
Be kind to yourself and your kids, there is a learning curve to this that will never straighten out and change is the name of the game.
I hope everyone has a wonderful fun year!
Blessed Be,

Conversations from Nowhere!
Have you ever called someone up that you didn't know about something and ended up having a wonderful conversation with them? Tonight I answered an add on craigslist for some books. The add was really for an amazon bookstore and when I looked I found several books that I wanted. I e-mailed the person asking since we were local would she be interested in selling directly, she was and sent me her phone number.
Turns out she is a first grade teacher who had switched schools and wanted to clear out her shelves. We talked about Amazon, what kinds of books we sold and then she asked where I taught. I told her we were homeschoolers and she sounded delighted to meet someone who homeschooled. We went on to talk about teaching styles, teaching to the test, and the freedom in teaching kids that she wished she had, I told her about the baby hummingbirds and barn owls we were watching
,http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Hummingbird_Cam.html,http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Oceanside_Barn_Owls.html
she was really excited about these and planned to show her kids. We then started talking about teaching again and I told her about the Waldorf style of teaching. This style of teaching sounded very intriguing to her and she planned on finding out more about it. I think we only ended our conversation because according to my kids they were Starving!! How fun it is though to call someone out of the blue and have such a great informative conversation with a complete stranger. We didn't even exchange names until the very end. This has only ever happened to me once before. I had called our local Alpaca farm to get some manure from him. I said we had been there with our homeschool group and loved his alpacas. He asked if I would answer some questions for him and I said yes. Since he had so many homeschool groups to come thru his place he was curious about them. He wanted to know why people homeschooled, were there regulations to follow, who decided the curriculum and was it legal. Also what about college? He was really surprised when I told him the colleges and University were actively recruiting homeschool graduates! Now this gentleman wasn't planning to homeschool, his kids were his alpacas. He just wanted to understand more about the families that came to see him.
What a concept, to actively seek out information on a group you had dealings with but didn't understand but wanted to! How would our world have changed if lets say the Indians and the Pilgrims, had done this, the Israelis and the Palestinians', or maybe just you and your neighbor, you and your kid. Trying to keep and open mind and see and understand where another person is coming from is one of the hardest things a person can ever learn in my opinion.
Have you ever had a conversation like that, what did you think about it?
ps. I know people are reading this, I see it in the stats everyday. I would really like
to get some feedback or comments about whatever the subject is sometimes.

What we are up to!
This week has been a busy week for us. Last weekend I bought a Djembi drum and on Monday I went to a women's drum group that meets at the UU. I had a great time and hope to go often.
The girls have been doing great with the ALEKS math program and on Tuesday we made a multiplacation clock. We are always looking for ways to cement multiplaction into their brains
The girls have been doing great with the ALEKS math program and on Tuesday we made a multiplacation clock. We are always looking for ways to cement multiplaction into their brains We made Gods Eye's this week and will probably try to do someting like that with different shaps. On Thursday we had friends over for the day, we had to make a run to the store and on the way back decided to find a yardsale that we had seen signs for. If you have never tried to follow signs on a back country rd. it can be interestring! We didn't buy anything at the sale but we did talk with the truss company next door about getting scraps for wood crafts, they said we could have all we wanted, can't wait to come up with some projects. On Friday we went to our co-op class which was about Egypt this week. The families did a wonderful presentation and it was great to see the kids asking great questions and add so much to the conservation. Afterward we ate Egyptian food (yum) and started talking about putting a cookbook together with all the countries recieps that we are doing. In our group we have about eleven 9-13 yr old girls with there being about 20 to 25 kids most of the time. The last few weeks the girls have had a hard time getting along( it has become a major issue) so the moms have decided to have a descussion group with them. Most of the girls are taking a Bully Busters class at the UU and our next six week classes will be about conflict resolution with small groups and skits. I really hope these classes will help the kids learn to speak up for themselves and deal with conflict that they encounter as they grow.
All in all it was a good week, capped off with a 75* day on saturday!Saturday, January 22, 2011

This week in our homeschool!
We started back to school work this week, I know a little late but then we usually are. The book we read this week was by Megan Whalen Turner, The Thief. Gen, Eugenides is a thief. He boasts that he can steal anything. That lands him in the King of Sounis’ prison where he spends a couple of months until he is offered, by the King’s Magus, his freedom but in return he has to steal something that people don’t even think really exists. We all really liked it and the surprise ending was great. This is a series of 4 books and I look forward to reading them all. Zoe has picked our book for next week, Raising Dragons by Bryon Davis.
On Tuesday we made pumpkin bread to practice our math, all cup measurements were done with a 1/4 cup and we doubled the recipe. I signed the girls up for 3 free months of ALEKS Math,http://www.aleks.com/, we will see how that goes. Zoe spent one afternoon sewing a summer top which she then put over her long sleeved shirt, it came out really cute. They have practiced dictation and working with watercolors. We have found out that splatter painting in the bathtub is not such a good idea! Piper and I played chess with her teaching chess set she received for Christmas and then we looked up kids chess sites online. We start our co-op tomorrow, Yea!! We are doing countries and tomorrow is India. Everyone brings food for the country that is spotlighted with two families doing the research and getting the craft materials together. Our family will be doing China soon. We have also been been working on our handwork by making gnomes. On Wee Folk there are some adorable patterns for gnomes and everything they need for a Gnome home. We are working our way thru the patterns. We also watched Legend of the Guardians(great movie) and are doing research on the owls that we saw in the movie. All in all a good week and better than I expected. How has your homeschool week gone?

Good Morning Homeschoolers!
Good morning and Happy New Year to everyone!
My favorite secular home school site has a new giveaway this morning! Secular Homeschooling will be giving away a set of books from Arithmetic Village. These look like a great way to engage your kids in learning math, the characters are ones that the kids can role play with to really get the idea that math is fun. These books would be great for a co-op class with costumes and all.
http://www.arithmeticvillage.com/
http://www.secularhomeschool.com/content/1-the-front-page
They also have a great list of homeschool blogs and you will find us there to!
http://www.secularhomeschool.com/content/207-Secular-Homeschool-Blogs
Also ck out Earthschooling. This is a wonderful Waldorf site that leads you preschool thru 7th(more grades to come) with a gentle rhythmic way of learning for you kids. There are different levels of membership and with the lifetime membership you can share the cost with one person. I really wish I had known about this resource when my kids were younger.I look forward to playing with it this next year. http://thebearthinstitute.memberlodge.com/Default.aspx?pageId=625979
I spent yesterday working on organizing our craft area, I needed half the shelves for my fabric. I was inspired by a blog by Pioneer Women,http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeschooling/2010/12/white-out/.
I love everything about this room and while I know mine will never look this neat, I will do what I can to organize our homeschool this well.I am pairing down books , art supplies and other homeschool materials that I now realize that we will not ever use. Trying to stream line our learning areas a bit. Some I will put on my amazon bookstore, most I will pass on to other homeschoolers.
Do you do this in between semesters or are you super organized from the beginning of the school year? The main thing I really like about homeschooling is that you can change course in the year when you find something is not working for your child,ok, that and not getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to get the kids on the school bus!
I hope everyone has a wonderful start to the new year and lots of learning going on!

Secular Homeschooling
I found a great homeschooling website ( http://www.secularhomeschool.com/content/ ) and they do lots of giveaways. Today it is a blogwriting course. Blogging 101 course from BlogWritingCourse.com, this looks like alot of fun and I would love to win. Blogging has become a great intrest to me. Reading blogs about a large assortment of subjects and getting comments from folowers from around the world on my own blog has been a great learning experience. Also in the homeschooling world it is sometimes hard to find (but getting better) a secular homeschool curruilum, truly secular homeschool groups are even harder to find. When a site like Secular Homeschool comes along it gives us another great avenue to broaden our kids horizens. Two other great homeschool curruilum sites are Oak Meadow(http://www.oakmeadow.com/) and Earthschooling (http://thebearthinstitute.memberlodge.com/Default.aspx?pageId=625979) Though nether one is truly secular, they both carry excelent curruilum in which to teach your children. What are your favorite homeschool sites? What currulium do you use?

Getting Started
We started back to school yesterday. The public schools didn't, they canceled for snow.Sometimes the girls are not sure if learning at home is a good thing or not! We played a States game, played a math game, took a trip to the local library. We hadn't been there yet and I thought the children's library was great. The adult side need a little help. Great fiction side but the non fiction was a little sparse. The great thing is the cards that we got can be used a all the local libraries.
I have found that through home schooling that I need a curriculum to follow more than the girls. Next year I plan to get either Oak Meadow or something like that. Zoe really liked the McGuffey readers they used on their trip to a one room school house. I might try those out to. The problem is that there is so much choice out there for homeschoolers that it can be very overwhelming. Finding one that works with your child and hoping that both kids will work with it is a challenge. Also finding one that is not christened based can be a struggle. There are more and more coming on line and the web is a wonderful resource. We are planning a unit study on Gods and Goddesses and the Pagan religion. Eventually I think we will do unit studies on all the religions.
